The New Forest C of E Primary School and Nursery

Physical Education and Sport Opportunities

Intent

Our vision is for all children at The New Forest C. of E. Primary school is to experience excellent physical education, school sport and physical activity that will lead to life-long participation. Our PE curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils develop the fundamental skills and competence to excel in a wide range of physical activities by providing a broad and balanced curriculum with opportunities for all to be enjoyed. It will allow pupils to learn about themselves, the importance of a healthy lifestyle, self-expression and concepts such fair play and respect. It also contributes to the development of a range of important cognitive skills such as decision-making and analysis, and social skills such as teamwork and communication.

Our PE curriculum will be inclusive and ensure that pupils of all abilities access the range of activities we offer and that they are physically active for sustained periods of time in order to encourage them to lead healthy, active lives. There will also be opportunities for pupils to take on leadership roles in which they can build character and embed values such as fairness and respect.  Regular participation in sport and physical activity can help to reduce the risk of heart failure; improve physical fitness; help with weight management; promote good health; instil self- discipline; develop skill; improve self- confidence; reduce stress and develop lifelong learning skills.

Implementation

We follow the 2014 National Curriculum and our expectation is that all children are showing progress in line with national expectations. It is the responsibility of each class teacher to monitor and ensure that this progress is made. The subject leader works with each teacher to monitor this progress and to ensure that sufficient challenge is given to each child.

Impact

Teachers measure the impact of the curriculum through formative and summative assessment. From this assessment teachers will adapt and change their planning according to the needs of all of the children.   Subject leaders will also measure the impact of the curriculum through learning walks, pupil voice and teacher surveys. Individual pupil data, in accordance with objectives within the National Curriculum, is collected and analysed three times a year. This data is recorded on the school’s electronic data base (INSIGHT) to monitor attainment and progress.  We have achieved the Sainsbury Gold School Sport’s Award as well as Silver Healthy School Award in recognition of the excellent provision at the school.

For the third year in a row we are delighted to announce that we have once again, achieved the Gold School Games award! We would like to thank all of the teachers and volunteers who help us achieve this award. Next year we have the opportunity of achieving Platinum level!

The school has been awarded with ActiveMark status and we have successfully achieved the Gold School Games Award for 2018-29! Next year we shall be aiming for Gold again!
