20.1.19

Today we thought about how we can find out about the design of castles.

To find out about the past we can;

“Look in books”- Beanie

“Look up things on a computer “- Archie

“Go and visit castles”- Rory

We worked together to draw our own plans of all the buildings that might have been inside castle walls. Then we made our own clay castles that we will paint once they have dried.

16.1.2020 In maths this week we have been working hard on adding numbers up to 20.  We found that knowing pairs that made 10 helped us with pairs that made 20.  There will be some new mathletics activities set on Friday, but please keep practicing those number bonds to 10!

16.1.2020 In RE this term our Big Question is "Was is always easy for Jesus to show friendship?"  We acted out the story of Zacchaeus to give us a feel for what it might be like trying to make friends with someone that others didn't like.  There were some very angry faces when Zacchaeus took money to keep for himself and when Jesus made friends with him. Great acting Pines Class!

15.1.2020 We started our gymnastics sessions in Landford Village Hall.  This week we were trying to use a stretch shape in our work.

13.1.20

Today in English we were history detectives! We worked with a partner to look in non-fiction books about castles to find out about different parts of a castle. Next we made notes on post-it stickers before writing in our books all the different parts of a castle we had found.

7.1.20  Term 3                                    Castles!

We have started our new topic, 'Castles'.  The big question we are thinking about this term is; 'What was it like to live in a castle?'

We have started to think about how castles were built and started to make one.

Today was our Big Story Day and we worked with Year 4 to think about Jesus' miracles. We used role play and wrote our own song versions.

20.12.19 We enjoyed our Christmas party food and are all ready for a good rest!  Merry Christmas everybody!

18.12.19 Father Christmas came to visit us and asked us what we would like for Christmas.  He gave us all a present and wished us a Happy Christmas.  We all promised to be very good so that we would stay on his nice list :)

11.12.19  We have been working really hard on our nativity play "Hey Ewe" and we performed our dress rehearsal to our older KS2 siblings, Pre-school, Governors, Open The Book team and elderly members of our community.  They all really enjoyed it!

Kipper stories 11.12.19

Today we finished our work on Kippers Birthday. Earlier this week we planned a new version of the story. Today, we sat in small groups and re told our new versions of the story to a friend. We then used our plans to write our own Kipper stories. They are brilliant and show that we have started to write in more detail!

5.12.19 Today we started our final maths unit for this term, Numbers from 10 to 20.  We thought about them as a ten and some ones and that when we write the number down, the digit 1 must come first as it shows that there is one ten.  There will be some mathletics activities from Friday if you wish to practice at home.  Using a 10p coin and some pennies is also a really great way to practice too.

4.12.19 Our Big Question in RE is "Why does Christmas matter to Christians?".  We have been learning that during Advent, Christians try to prepare themselves inside for baby Jesus arriving.  In our Advent Calendar we have a suggestion each day of ways that we can share our School Values of Kindness, Fairness and Hope with others.

29.11.19 Today we have been learning about Christingles and what the different parts represent.  We had a lovely time making Christingles for the service on Sunday.

28.11.19 In RE we have been learning about the story of The Lost Son from The Bible and how Christians believe that it teaches them that God is a loving father who forgives.  We acted out some scenes where we made a wrong choice, said sorry and were forgiven.  Great acting Pines Class!

28.11.19 We have been learning about 3D shapes and the children have really enjoyed this song (unfortunately it doesn't include pyramids) and they were very keen to sing it at home!

Have fun :)  https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zps34wx

We have also assigned some new Mathletics activities to try from this weekend to support our learning about shapes.

Kipper's Birthday.

In English we are looking at the book 'Kipper's Birthday'. We have made invitations and this week we are inventing cake recipe's.

Some ingredients arrive into Pines Post Office. Barnaby delivered sunflower seeds for Sam to put in his cake!

11.11.19 Remembrance Day

Today we talked about Remembrance Day and tried to answer the question; Why do we wear poppies on November 11th?

"We wear poppies to remember the people who fought in the wars. We remember the people who dies in the wars by wearing poppies." Chase

"We need to say thank-you to the soldiers by buying poppies. We wear poppies to say thank-you soldiers, dogs and horses." Edie

"We wear poppies to thank all of the soldiers who fighted to help our country. Thank-you soldiers." Rory

We made our own fields of poppies pictures.

7.11.19 We did a firework dance as part of our topic on celebrations.  We had a lovely time using coloured scarves to add to the effect.

Term 2 'Let's Celebrate'

Welcome back to Term 2. We hope you have had a relaxing break. This term is always a busy one as we lead up to Christmas. Please remember to send in a tracksuit for PE and label any gloves and hats.

Please use the links below to read our curriculum letter and see this term's spelling lists. We have included the home learning expectationsfor Year 1.

Home Learning

Phonics homework- This will be set weekly on a Thursday  and will be checked the following Thursday by a staff member. We will be sending out spellings for the whole term.

This year we are trying a cummulative apporach to help embed the learning of the tricky words. There are 5 words for week 1, then the original 5 plus 5 more for week 2 and finally 5 more plus the original 10 for week 3. The words are Year 1 common exception words. Each week in class we will check how the children are getting on with these words. For the remaining weeks of term we will have 'lucky dip' spellings using a selection of the 15 words they have learnt. In Term 3 we will repeat this with different words. Please see the link below for the Term 2 list.
Regular reading – ideally your children should be reading at least 3 times a week. If your child is a reluctant reader remember ‘little and often’ – a page or two regularly is better than a long battle. Please come and speak to one of us if you would like any further advice.
Please be aware of fluency, accuracy, and understanding of the text, expression and their ability to follow punctuation. This is also a time when you can ask them to re-tell part of the story, to predict what might happen and to question them about the characters, setting and plot. Your child should also be developing his/her opinion of the text and considering how and why events are happening.
This term we are introducing a star reward system for home learning. Each child  will be given a sticker at the end of each week if they have read three times and completed phonics homework. When they have a full set of stickers they will receive a certifificate.

Forest Friday 18.10.19

We met on The Green, looked for signs of Autumn and identified beech, oak and holly trees.

We walked into the forest and made mobiles to hang in our outdoor area. We hung leaf shapes that we had written on our thoughts about the world.

We thought about how we are like a little leaf on a branch, all different and special.  The branch of leaves is like our class and the tree is like our school and the forest is like all the schools with lots of other children.

18.10.19 Some new Mathletics activities have been added to follow on from the work we have been doing in class on number bonds to 10.

3.10.19 We had a wonderful time at St Andrew's Church celebrating Harvest.  We showed our vegetable paintings, sang songs, said prayers together and brought donations in to be sent to The Trussell Trust to help families in need.

2.10.19

This week we have been thinking about the vegetables that are ready to harvest. We made and tried vegetable soup and then written some instructions.

In maths we have learnt how to use'part-whole models' to partition numbers to 10.

27.9.19 This week in dance we explored how we can express our feelings through dancing.  Can you tell our feelings by the way we are moving and our expressions?  We performed happy, cross and relaxed dances.

20.9.19 We have been having lots of fun in our outdoor area with our new toys, funded by our fabulous PTA.  Thank you to the PTA for helping us enjoy this wonderful September sunshine, you can see that we are doing a fantastic job of sharing our new toys and co-operating brilliantly with each other.

18.9.19 We loved meeting Teddy the dog today, the newest member of The New Forest team.

13.9.19 Mathletics and Purple Mash passwords are stuck in the front of reading diaries for you to use as you wish to.  Some Mathletics activities has been assigned and more will follow in a few weeks. There is no deadline set for the activities however once they are completed you will then be able to access more of the website. Have fun!

12.9.19

We danced the story of The Creation in our PE lesson – separating the waters, creating the arch of the sky, the seas, the dry land and plants, the sun, moon and stars and of course all of the animals.  We needed a rest at the end just like God!

9.9.19
